“OWIE OW OW OW OW OUCHIE OUCH-UGHHHH” The crowd exclaimed in unison.

When someone thinks about putting Mojohand and/or Kyle Gordon into a box: the musicians do the hokie-pokie, turn themselves about, and leap right out of the box. Using metaphors, satire, and irony as masquerades to express their truest inner worlds; these musicians mix authenticity with critical social analysis and bring out a good time.

16 week old instagram, Rock band, Mojohand’s comes out swinging some sweet tunes. Having played for ~10 years, b bandmates Elijah Klein, Jasper Mahncke, Joe Dinardo, Ian D’Arcy, birthed this 70’s band fifty years delayed. Dabbling in country music with Dungarees (2025), Blues, and Folk music with albums Moving On (2023) and Songbook (2021). These four boys know the west better than Lewis and Clark. As the backing band for Kyle Gordon’s Spoof-tastic Tour through the history of modern music, they could rock.

Like moving caricatures, Mojohand played a sweet, supple, and loud set, getting the crowd energized for the night. After the first song, the crowd was pretty stiff; but after lead singer Elijah’s speech set the tone—there wasn’t a moment of stillness—he said something along the lines of: “If you came here expecting a comedy show, you were wrong. If you also came here expecting a concert, you were also wrong. This? This is a mother-fucking party.”

I often wonder what comes first in satirical music: “It’d be crazy funny to spoof this” Or “There’s a problem with this.” When listening to the lyrics within Gordons’ spins on I.C.P.-esque horrorcore, Blur-esque alt rock, MCR-inspired lack-of-hope genre’s: He forces you to ask yourself ”Wow, these genres’ really do have a problem with the kind of stuff their saying.” On the other hand, when listening through his newest album History of Music, he does a deeper dive into the behavior of the pedophilic, exoticizational, and propagandizing icons and cultures that carry with modern music scenes.

Irony aside; There is a clear care that the performers had carrying them through the night. Every song, someone in the crowd asked “What the fuck is going on?” No one knew, no one will know, and no one needs to know. What Kyle Gordon brought to Kansas City was a good time.
